Heaven Can Wait
Heaven can wait Survivors and supporters celebrate hope
By Kate Ramsayer / The Bulletin
Kim Clark, of Bend, couldn't participate in the first Heaven Can Wait event to support breast cancer programs and research. In 2000, she had just had surgery for cancer, and remembers being barely able to wave at her friends who did walk in the event to support her.
But since then Clark, 52, has been back every year. And on Sunday morning she joined thousands of other cancer survivors and their supporters at Drake Park for the start of the 5K walk/run, which benefits Sara's Project at St. Charles.
“It's a great celebration, and it's fabulous to see everyone come out,” Clark said. “It's very touching.”
The Heaven Can Wait walk/run started with about 1,000 people and has grown since then, said Charlene Levesque, one of the founders of the event, noting that Sunday's event could reach close to 4,000 participants. So far, Heaven Can Wait has raised more than $640,000 for Sara's Project, which promotes early breast cancer detection and provides support for women with the disease.
It's a way to give hope to people going through cancer treatments to see the survivors, who wear denim hats, participating as well, Levesque said.
“You can look around the park and see those blue denim caps worn by women who are happy and healthy,” she said. “You can look and say, ‘I can do it.'”
Ivy Suber, 79, of Klamath Falls, never expected to have to deal with breast cancer, but on Sunday — two months after a mastectomy — she was walking in the event with her family.
“Everyone's supporting grandma,” she said, surrounded by grandchildren from ages 1 to 17.
And while she's new to the race, Suber said she was glad it's raising money to help those with breast cancer.
“It's supporting the organization that supports the women,” she said.
Teams were popular at the Heaven Can Wait event, and many wore T-shirts that expressed encouragement or remembered family and friends.
Christian Gladd, 37, stood out with a pink mohawk he had grown and dyed for the event.
Gladd was part of a 34-member team to support his mother-in-law, Carolyn Stallings, who is currently fighting breast cancer. He ran in last year's Heaven Can Wait event, just to run it, but now the event takes on a different meaning, he said.
“It's really hitting home,” Gladd said.
His daughter Kenzie said she was happy to be supporting her grandmother.
“I think she's honored that we can come out here,” she said.
Heaven Can Wait is an occasion to be around people who are going through similar things, said Kimm Roberts, 37, who wore a “Team Linda” baseball-style jersey to honor her mother, who died of lung cancer earlier this year.
“It just looks like there is some amazing support here,” she said, noting the messages on other people's shirts.
And although Suzi MacLeod, 76, usually runs in events like these, Sunday she said she was honored to walk with her friends. Heaven Can Wait is an unusual event, she said, because it raises money for a local Central Oregon charity.
“This one is very local, and very personal,” she said.

Running to fight the odds
Bend race for breast cancer research attracts hundreds more than last year
By Rachael Scarborough King / The Bulletin
Published: June 04. 2007 5:00AM PST
Drake Park was awash in pink - spray-painted pink sneakers, pink baseball caps and pink T-shirts and running shorts - as thousands of people ran and walked a 5K course Sunday to support breast cancer research.
The eighth annual Heaven Can Wait race, which encompassed a circular course beginning and ending in Drake Park, attracted about 2,600 people, according to organizers' estimates. Officials said that is about a 10 percent increase over last year's turnout for the event, which raises money for the St. Charles Foundation's Sara Fisher Breast Cancer Project.
Relaxing around a food tent after the race, some participants and onlookers carried signs that read, "Save the Ta Ta's" and "Give a Hand for Healthy Boobs!!!"
Race Director Charlene Levesque said Sunday that she does not know yet how much money this year's event raised, but the race took in about $76,000 last year.
"Money is my fourth reason for putting on this event, so it's kind of afterward," Levesque said, adding that the main goals of the race are to raise awareness about breast cancer and encourage healthy activities like walking and running.
Levesque started Heaven Can Wait in 2000 after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the event's Web site.
For many people, the race was a family affair, with participants pinning notes to their T-shirts with the names of family and friends who have had the disease. Many breast cancer survivors, distinguished by special blue baseball caps, also ran and walked.
Karen Brockway, who said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December, was joined by her husband and teenage son and daughter in walking the course. Brockway, 45, said it helped her to be part of the supportive crowd.
"It's part of the healing," she said.
Her daughter, Sarah, 13, added that it felt good to participate in the event.
"(It's) a feeling of helping someone else that's not as fortunate," Sarah said.
Ryan and Dorothy Miller also did the course as a family, pushing their 17-month-old son Nate in a stroller. Dorothy Miller said this was her fourth year participating in Heaven Can Wait, and Ryan and Nate were there for the second year in a row.
"A friend of mine got me to do it the first time and I was so moved by the opening remarks that I kept at it," said Dorothy Miller, 34, adding that she and her husband have some relatives who are cancer survivors.
"It's a great cause and it's nice that so much of the money stays locally," Ryan Miller, 35, said.
About 600 people ran in the timed race, Levesque said, which included prizes like gift certificates for the top three runners in each age category. The overall winner was Lisa Nye, 43, of Bend, who completed the course in just more than 18 minutes.
Another race participant, Melissa Jacot, said she has recently taken up running and added, "I wanted to challenge myself with a 5K."
"I participated because I have friends that are survivors of breast cancer and I wanted to run in their honor," Jacot, 46, said. "It raises awareness, and really the camaraderie you feel with all the other walkers and participants is really cool."

Racers rumble over C.O. trails
240 turn out for Peterson Ridge Rumble 30K, 60K
Photos by Pete Erickson / The Bulletin
Ultramarathoners Robert Graham, left, a 46-year-old from Eugene, and Michael McCarthy, a 43-year-old from West Linn, make their way out of Wychus Canyon south of Sisters during the Peterson Ridge Rumble 60K foot race on Sunday. In all, 240 participants started either the 60K or the 30K race.
By Katie Brauns / The Bulletin
Published: April 16. 2007 5:00AM PST
SISTERS - It was one of those perfect Central Oregon days: sun shining, with a light breeze blowing along the winding Peterson Ridge trails, which were lined with budding manzanita. Also, there were yellow ribbons and caution tape clipped with clothes pins to the trees, providing guidance for runners along the route.
Peterson Ridge Rumble racers rocked the 30-kilometer and 60K distances Sunday near Sisters, some of the runners taking inadvertent detours off the set track.
Kami Semick, 40, and Beverly Anderson-Abbs, 43, both of Bend, were two of the racers who accidentally detoured. Yet they still managed to take first and second place overall for the women's 60K.
"In the grunt section we took a right and went up a dirt road," explained Semick. "I don't know if the markers were moved or what. ... I know that we weren't the
only ones that had that experience."
For a large portion of the race, Semick, Anderson-Abbs and Kelly Woodke of Eugene were running together.
The three realized about halfway through the 60K that they were off course by two miles when Woodke oriented them on his Global Positioning System.
"After that we picked up the pace," said Woodke, 39.
"We were going at a 6-minute-and-50-second pace (per mile) at mile 21. Kami was putting the hammer down. She was saying, 'Let's get caught up.' "
Given the detour, it was understandable that Semick felt "a little tired" at the end of the race.
Anderson-Abbs, celebrating her 43rd birthday on Sunday, limply walked away from the finish line while holding her right hip. Though she appeared to be experiencing some serious pain at the end of the race, she pushed through it to finish.
"There are times where I just try to block it (the pain) out," said Anderson-Abbs. "I put one foot in front of the other ... I look at the next guy ahead of me and think: There's not that much more to go - just keep going."
That's probably what was going through the minds of most of the 240 racers at one point or another Sunday, whether they were competing in the 30K (18.6 miles) or 60K (37.6 miles) race.
Top finisher in the men's 60K was Rod Bien, 34, of Bend, who crossed the finish line with his 4-year-old son, Fisher, after plucking the boy from the sidelines of the track at Sisters Middle School about 50 meters before the finish.
Bien finished the race in 4:42:07.
"I wanted to win this one," said Bien. "Sean (Meissner), the race director, is one of my best friends, so it meant a lot to me to win this one. It's more special."
Bien's plan for today? Run 15 to 20 miles in his continued training for the Western States 100, a 100-mile running race in California this July.
The field for the fifth annual Peterson Ridge Rumble was full of impressive athletes with jaw-dropping stories. Winner of the women's 30K was 23-year-old Portlander Alexandra (Ali) Miles, whose time of 2:32:02 beat out Bend's Amy Petersen, 37, by a mere 30 seconds.
Standing approximately 6 feet tall, Miles was competing in her first long-distance race ever.
"I've never raced real long," said Miles. "This is the longest I have done."
Though Miles said she has run a number of races in the past, the distances typically ranged from 800 meters to 5K.
Winning the men's 30K, Bend's Andy Martin, 31, sailed in at 1:54:18.
"I remember doing the first race (four years ago)," Martin recalled. "It started at (race director) Sean Meissner's house. ... It's grown quite a bit in the last four or five years. ... It's great to see these local trail races."
Some racers have made it a tradition to compete in the Peterson Ridge Rumble. Gene Trahern, 44, of Sisters, and his son Garrett Trahern, 12, and Mason Calmettes, also 12, ran the 30K distance race together Sunday for the second year in a row.
Gene Trahern has run the race every year since its onset. And Garrett has competed three years in a row.
"The first year I just woke up and said, 'I want to do this,' Garrett shared.
The two 12-year-old boys said they get out and race with little training.
"Train?" Garrett asked. "What train(ing)?"
Ah, to be young - or a dog. A special canine division was offered for Sunday's 30K, and Chili, a vizsla Hungarian pointer, took first place. The dog's owner, Rob Fontaine, 38, traveled all the way from Campbell River, British Columbia, to run the race with his training partner, Chili. Fontaine took fourth for the men's 30K.
As Chili leisurely sat near the finish line chewing a pig's ear on the red rubber track at Sisters Middle School, his reddish-brown fur slick and shiny, Fontaine bent down with his hands to his knees trying to catch his breath.
"Yeah," Fontaine commented, glancing toward the dog, "he looks a lot better than I do right now."
But all in all, most of the finishers miraculously appeared unscathed and unaffected by the distances they completed Sunday. It was strong group of athletes at the Peterson Ridge Rumble, and they were loving it.
"Sean puts on a great race," said Semick. "I really enjoy coming out."
